Keeping Things Natural
One thing I hear all the time is, "We're awkward in front of the camera."
I promise—you don't have to know what you're doing. While I always try to get some more "tradtional" pictures towards the beginning, my sessions are all about movement, conversation, and giving you little prompts . We'll walk, talk, laugh, and probably get our feet wet. Before you know it, you'll forget the camera is even there. That's when the best photos happen.
Golden Hour By The Dunes
Golden hour has always been my favorite time to photograph, but moving from California to the North Carolina coast has completely changed the way I experience it. Back in California, the sun melts right into the ocean. It's dramatic, colorful, and over in what feels like an instant. Here on the coast, it's different—and I've grown to love it just as much.
Blue Hour by the water
As the sun slipped below the horizon, we made our way back down to the water for "blue hour". The colors completely shifted, trading warm golds for soft blues. The beach felt quieter, the waves were calm, and everything had this peaceful, almost cinematic feel to it.
I love ending sessions this way because it gives you two completely different looks in one evening. You get the warmth and glow of golden hour, then the cool, cozy feel of blue hour along the shoreline. It always feels like the perfect way to wrap up a session—and yes, it's absolutely worth staying those extra few minutes after sunset.
Why I Love Photographing At Topsail Beach
As a Coastal North Carolina photographer, I spend a lot of time on our beautiful beaches. There’s just something about the North Carolina coast that slows everything down. The salty air, the sound of the waves, and that dreamy golden light right before sunset make it the perfect place to capture your story.
Topsail Beach is one I keep coming back to. It has a quieter, laid-back feel that makes sessions feel relaxed from the very beginning. The wide beaches, soft dunes, and incredible sunsets never disappoint.
Whether you're visiting for vacation or lucky enough to call this area home, it's such a beautiful place to document this season of your life.
